RJO hires Janet Mirasola from RBC to lead metals broking

23 April 2010

RJ O’Brien, the US futures broker, has appointed base metals specialist Janet Mirasola as managing director of its metals team. She will be based in New York, leading the firm’s new strategic partnership with Sucden Financial, the London-based derivatives broker.

Sucden will execute transactions for RJO on the London Metal Exchange.

Mirasola will report to Joseph Murphy, executive vice-president and president of the Americas. Stacy Winters also joins the team as a vice-president, reporting to Mirasola.

RJO said Mirasola specialised in bringing clients “unique research and custom brokerage services”, which a spokesperson said had earned her a “loyal following” of clients over the years. At RJO, she will open each day with “sophisticated” analysis of the global metals market, disseminated to clients before the market opens.

Mirasola joins from Royal Bank of Canada, where she had been vice-president of execution and sales for base metals since 2007. She developed the bank’s client activities in base metals in the US and Canada after it launched a New York-based metals desk in 2007.

Before joining RBC, Mirasola ran her own broker firm, which specialised in base metals on the LME. From 1992 to 2000, she established and ran the metals business for Lehman Brothers, where she was responsible for both London and New York trading. She has also held senior positions at Merrill Lynch, where she managed the firm’s New York-based LME division.

Winters joins from Great Lakes Copper, where she was a founder and co-partner, and maintained all client relationships.

The partnership between RJO and Sucden Financial was announced on February 3. It gives the US firm access to the LME without a membership.

Sucden, which is a Category One Ring-dealing member of the LME, will gain access to RJO’s large network of clients.
